Hello!
Did you know that the famous cosmic body discovered in
Namibia in 1920 is known as the Hoba meteorite? This impressive natural wonder
was discovered in what was then South-West Africa, on the northern edge of the
region near the town of Grootfontein, on the territory of the Hoba West Farm.
The historic discovery happened entirely by chance when a local farmer and
landowner, Jacobus Hermanus Brits, was ploughing his field with an ox-drawn
plough. While ploughing the earth, the plough suddenly struck an unusually hard
metallic obstacle hidden beneath a shallow layer of soil, and subsequent
excavations revealed a massive, flat metallic plate, the greater part of which
lay underground.
The meteorite derived its name from the area where it
was found—the Hoba Farm—while the word "Hoba" itself also means
"gift" in the local language. Although the meteorite reached Earth
approximately 80,000 to 300,000 years ago, due to its unusual flat shape,
shallow angle of entry, and strong atmospheric deceleration, it did not even
create a traditional large impact crater. Scientists have calculated that at
the time of impact, the initial mass of the cosmic body could have reached about
500 tons, but the major part of it burned up or evaporated in the atmosphere,
while the solid mass that landed on the ground has lost some of its weight over
time due to environmental weathering and vandalism.
Currently, the Hoba meteorite is estimated to weigh
about 60 tons (some historical sources indicate up to 66 tons), and its
physical dimensions are approximately 2.7 meters in length and width, and about
0.9 meters in thickness, making it officially recognized as the largest known
intact meteorite and the largest naturally occurring piece of iron on Earth.
According to its chemical and mineralogical composition, this cosmic find
belongs to a rare type of iron meteorites known as ataxites, which are characterized
by an exceptionally high nickel content. Precise laboratory tests have shown
that the meteorite consists of approximately 82–84 percent iron, about 16
percent nickel, as well as small amounts of cobalt and traces of phosphorus;
due to the extremely high nickel concentration, it completely lacks the
characteristic Widmanstätten crystal structure lines found in most other
metallic meteorites.
The first official scientific conclusions and
metallurgical analysis were published in 1929 by researcher L. J. Spencer, and
in subsequent decades geologists and metallurgists conducted extensive research
to understand the structure of protoplanetary cores in the early solar system
and the magnetic properties of the meteorite. Addressing the question of
radiation, it is important to note that the Hoba meteorite is not
radioactive—it contains no traces of radioactive element decay, and therefore
poses no threat to health whatsoever, although in later years local uranium
mining companies financially supported protective measures against vandals.
Due to its immense weight and scale, the meteorite has
never been moved, nor has there ever been an attempt to displace it from its
original site of discovery. To protect this priceless scientific object, the
Namibian government declared it a national monument back in 1955. In 1987, the
farm owner donated the plot of land to the state, after which a stone
amphitheater, a visitor information center, and security infrastructure were
built around the meteorite to curb souvenir hunters who had previously attempted
to chip away pieces of it. Today, the Hoba meteorite is one of the most visited
and popular tourist destinations in Namibia, where thousands of travelers from
all over the world can directly see and touch a millenniums-old cosmic relic
under the open sky.
According to the accounts of visionaries and psychics
(not scientists!), the Hoba meteorite is described not as a mere chunk of
metal, but as a powerful cosmic "beacon" or energy accumulator. It is
claimed that information codes from the deep reaches of the universe have been
transmitted through it to Earth for billions of years, and the metal itself
acts as an ancient battery that still preserves primordial information of
cosmic origin regarding the formation of star systems.
During hypnotic sessions or regressive meditations
conducted by certain esoteric practitioners, visual memories of the actual
moment of impact are allegedly experienced. Participants in these visions
report seeing not a conventional fireball, but a blinding stream of light in a
strange violet or silver hue that slashed across the sky and consciously chose
its landing site on the territory of present-day Namibia, anchoring certain
planetary energy lines in place.
A popular vision also suggests that people near the
meteorite experience a strange slowing of the passage of time or emotional
relief, which esoteric practitioners attribute to the cleansing effect of the
"golden metal field." Supposedly, the nickel-iron compound creates a
subtle magnetic field that resonates with the human heart chakra, helping to
clear subconscious traumas and connect the individual with universal
consciousness.
