Map
of Baltic Tribes in the 13th Century: Sudovians-Yotvingians, Lamatians,
Skalvians, Semigallians, Curonians, Selonians, Aukštaitians, Lithuanians, and
others.
This map depicts the territories inhabited by Baltic
tribes, which were crucial to the ethnocultural formation and political
development of our region from approximately the first centuries of our era
until the establishment of the Lithuanian state in the 13th century. Each area
marked on it reflects a distinct tribal community, characterized by unique
customs, economic activities, and defensive structures, while the visually
presented figures illustrate the attire and lifestyle peculiarities of the time,
which, according to archaeological data, were characteristic of this period.
Such a distribution allows for a clearer understanding
of the geographical spread of the ancient Baltic tribes, such as the Curonians,
Samogitians, Aukštaitians, Lithuanians, Selonians, Semigallians, Skalvians,
Lamatians, and Sudovians-Yotvingians, during their peak period before the onset
of more intense military conflicts with neighboring states and orders. This
period is the Late Iron Age, when tribal structures reached their highest
organizational form, becoming the foundation for the future early Lithuanian
state.
The map seems to combine archaeological and
ethnographic knowledge into a unified, historically relevant image, allowing
for a better understanding of our ancestors' space and the origins of their
cultural heritage. It is a space where a unique Baltic identity was formed,
which later became an inseparable part of European history.
